History

When you look at the history behind HCS, it's easy to trace the flexibility and stability – which today have become hallmarks of the company – back to its founding more than 40 years ago.

By 1968, Joe Fahey, a former 10-year IBM veteran and then project manager at Monmouth Medical Center in NJ, and Joe Manzi, a systems director at the facility, already had the world's first hospital information system installation under their belts. Visitors from around the globe came to see the system, which took orders entered by physicians and routed them throughout the hospital for proper action and follow-up. Updates were flowed back to the doctors and appropriate departments.

With a vision of installing similar clinical systems at hospitals throughout the US, Fahey asked Manzi to join him. The rest is history:

1971 HCS installs its first healthcare financial system
1977 HCS live at eight NJ hospitals
1982 Fahey and Manzi assume full ownership of HCS
1992 HCS expands development of the integrated clinical system
1996 Changes name to Health Care Software, Inc. (HCS)
1999 HCS signs one of the nation’s largest behavioral health care providers
2002 HCS signs its first rehabilitation healthcare provider
2004 HCS enters the LTACH market with its first long-term acute care client
2005 Thomas J. Fahey is promoted to president of HCS
2006 HCS clients rank in top 25 of nation’s largest not-for-profit senior living organizations
2008 HCS installs multi-site, multi-state LTACH client
2009 HCS celebrates 40 years of service to the healthcare information system industry
2010 HCS delivers senior living clients MDS 3.0 weeks ahead of October 1 deadline
2011 HCS launches Interactant Mobile module
2012 HCS deploys SaaS-based LTCH CARE Data Set tool
2013 HCS Interactant EHR platform receives ONC Certification for Stage 1 Meaningful Use criteria by CCHIT
2014 HCS signs third largest skilled nursing provider in the U.S.
2015 HCS focuses expansion into inpatient psychiatric hospital market

The Next 50 Years

The company founded by Joe Fahey and Joe Manzi in 1969 – and now led by Tom Fahey – has provided clients with flexible software solutions for nearly 50 years. Its HCS Interactant product is a recognized leading healthcare software solution in use at organizations that span the spectrum of care.

But what’s in store for HCS in the next 50 years and beyond?

Interoperability and Information Exchange - HCS is well-positioned to handle these challenges, with 100% control over its software solutions and the company’s deep technical expertise and experience with information exchange.

Integration of EMR and Revenue Cycle Management -  A critical focus for HCS. “A client could have the best EMR, but if they are not generating charges and maintaining regulatory compliance with regard to reimbursement, they will fail," explains Tom Fahey.

The greatest challenge for any healthcare software is how the healthcare industry is changing. Whatever lies ahead for the industry, HCS will apply its thought-leadership and innovative technology to supporting its customers with market-leading healthcare information systems.
