Health Level Seven is an application protocol for electronic data exchange in healthcare environments. The HL7 protocol is a collection of standard formats which specify the implementation of interfaces between computer applications from different vendors.

Membership in this organization allows HCS to participate in the highest level of the International Standards Organizations (ISO) communications model for Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) paving the way for unified definition of data to be exchanged, timing interchanges, and communication of certain errors to the application. HL7 supports such functions as security checks, identification of the participants, availability checks, negotiating exchange mechanisms, and structuring the data exchanges themselves.
